Gemma Spofforth secures place at the London 2012 Olympics.
World record holder Gemma Spofforth sealed her place at London 2012 with a stunning final length in the British Championships 100m backstroke final. The 24-year-old, who almost quit the sport after a difficult world championships last summer, powered her way to victory over Georgia Davies. "I wanted to give it everything I had because it was going to be one of my last races," Spofforth told BBC Sport.
D: It has been written that you have become a legend, because no athlete before you has ever won medals in four consecutive World Championships. How do you feel?
R: Great, but perhaps I haven’t taken it in yet… maybe I will understand better what I have achieved over the years when I stop and look back over my career. For now I tend to stay focused on the next goal, I look ahead at competition after competition. Certainly each time you win a medal, you become more aware of your own abilities and this makes you stronger, but you need to be careful because in a second you can mess up and this is important above all in a discipline like diving, where sometimes it’s enough to get one dive wrong to jeopardize the whole season. There are only a few important competitions and you can risk everything in a fraction of a second, the duration of a dive. It is important to be vigilant and always stay very concentrated. When I stop we will do a few sums and see what I have managed to give to this sport.
D: This is your 5th World Championships’ medal, isn’t it? Which is the most “precious”?
R: Yes I have 5 medals, all fantastic and each one important for a different reason. It’s difficult to say which is the most precious. I could say the first one, the Bronze at Montreal in 2005 because it was the start of everything, or the one from Melbourne where I showed I was still on top form, or those from Rome since they were won in front of a home crowd. Or maybe this one from Shanghai, surely the most unexpected due to the accident and everything else. But if I have to choose, I would say the Silver at Rome 2009 won in the synchronized event with Francesca, not because it’s the medal made of the most precious metal but because it was won with a true friend. The emotions which we shared in front of our fans are unforgettable and indescribable, a very happy moment!
D: How much do you owe to your father for this result?
R: Absolutely nothing … I’m joking of course!! I owe a lot to my father, both as a coach and as a father, two roles which he covers extremely well. I am fortunate because I have grown up with the example of my father and my mother at home, two great athletes and two fantastic people, who transmitted to me not only the diving genes but also the humility and the character required to stay at the top. And then Giorgio the national coach is really good, a skilled trainer who does his work with great passion. Everything I have done up to now I have shared with him, but also with my mother, an important person in both our lives.
D: What has changed in this discipline from your start in Sydney when you were just 15 years old?
R: Mainly I have changed … the dives have remained virtually unchanged, it’s a tremendous sport, meaning you need little to jeopardize a whole year’s work, but at the same time it’s a wonderful sport which gives you a unique sensation in the air and when you enter the water. On the other hand I – as is logical – have matured; I have become more aware of my abilities and stronger mentally. However there is one thing which I regret: it is the carefree attitude with which I used to dive when I was at the start, I wasn’t afraid to make mistakes because nobody expected anything from me, whilst now I feel the weight of responsibility every time I climb onto the springboard. I know that around me there are always high expectations because in the last few years I have won a lot and therefore every time I must manage the pressure. It’s a different way to prepare for competitions, but in any case I am happy with this responsibility because it means that I have done something good.
D: The Italian Maria Marconi is also a key figure in diving, fourth for the fourth consecutive time (after the positions at the European championships in Budapest in the 1m springboard and those of the 1m and 3m in Turin) with the best result of her career. What do you want to say to her?
R: Maria is a responsible person, a real professional who in the last few years has done very well and for sure merited to win some medals. I can understand her disappointment because it hurts arriving so close to the podium every time and not reaching it. I know how much work is involved and for this reason I truly feel for her. Naturally when I am in a competition I only think of doing my best, it is my duty. However on the occasions in which I have lost a medal due to my performance, I feel a little bitter. But Maria is a tough person and I am sure that she will respond as she has always done and will come to the next competition even more competitive.
D: For you it was natural to start diving, with your father Giorgio a champion and national coach. But why should a young girl start diving?
R: Because it’s a fun sport and you spend a lot of time in an enjoyable place like a pool. A dive is a natural movement which children do for fun and it’s a fantastic feeling for a child, and an adult, to launch into the air and then enter the water. If you then start training and you see that you can do certain movements in the air, it makes you passionate and it triggers a desire to do better and better, to do the ever more perfect dive. And it’s very rewarding when you succeed because it’s the result of perseverance and determination: in this sense diving embodies important values which help a certain type of personality to mature.
D: Hard work and success, a lot of satisfaction but also a lot of effort and sacrifice: is there anything you would do differently?
R: Without a doubt I would do absolutely everything again. It’s true that being a diver means giving things up and lots of sacrifices, but today who doesn’t have to do the same thing? Everyone has to deal with difficult situations in life and every job hides pitfalls and difficulties which must be overcome. I consider myself fortunate because I do something I like and which has taught me a lot. It’s true that I wasn’t able to do the things other girls of my age did, dance until late into the evening, eat too much pizza, often be in the company of friends, but all these sacrifices have been amply repaid by the medals that I am proud to have won.
D: Obvious question: what does LONDON 2012 mean for you?
R: It’s a fundamental point in my career. For sure it’s the most important Olympics because I’ll get there with the good results from the last few years and I’m at the right age to try to win an Olympic medal, which is the only one I’m missing. It would mean finishing a journey started many years ago in Sydney, in the best way possible. I will work hard to prepare myself to the highest level, I will go to London and give it my all and we will see what happens. The Olympic medal is important but it mustn’t become an obsession; if it happens I will be very happy, and if not I will still be happy with what I have achieved because I know that I have always done my best. I don’t know what will happen after London 2012, I will only make a decision at that time if to continue or stop, based on how I feel.
Not only JAKED, but also Yamamay and Carpisa have chosen to be alongside the Italian team at the World Championships in which Italy is playing a leading role. Good luck to the Italian team, good luck FIN!
The Italian athlete is third in the 1 metre springboard
Bronze medal for Tania Cagnotto in the 1 metre springboard event at the Shanghai Championships. The Italian got 295.45 points and has grasped a memorable string of results. No Italian has ever won medals in four consecutive World championships. After the accident on 19 May of this year which cost her 30 stitches on her knee, a tibial hairline fracture and the subsequent operation to reduce the middle-third scaphoid fracture on her left hand, the result achieved today is still more important.
A fantastic result for an athlete who again showed to have what it takes and the personality to be a champion!
For Tania Cagnotto, it’s her fifth World Championships’ medal after the bronze in the 3 metre springboard in Montreal 2005, Melbourne 2007 and Rome 2009 (where she won silver together with Francesca Dallapè in the synchronized springboard). It was also an excellent result for Maria Marconi, placed fourth with 290.15 points.
"I believed in myself - says Tania- even if I have to admit that I began to lose hope on the second dive; then I saw that the others had also started to make mistakes and I regained confidence. And now I am happy!".
Massimiliano Rosolino has become a father: he has a daughter Sofia!

CONTRIBUTION OF JAKED TO AQUILA POOL WAITING A VISIT OF SWIM CHAMPIONS AT "RED ZONE"
To be close to the population affected by the earthquake last year and give a 'small' but significant contribution to sport Aquila, Jaked did homage to the municipal swimming pool 'Ondina Valla' de L'Aquila clothing and gear for the aquatic disciplines. Those facilities, consisting of an indoor swimming pool 25 meters by 8 lanes plus a smaller pool from five lanes, managed by the company located Rari Nantes in Ovid Avenue, near the stadium, despite the damage suffered to the cladding and the technological equipment in the tragic night of April 6, was able to reopen the following summer with all the difficulties of the case.
The building, on 15th June, will be half of a visit by the authorities and an international delegation of swimmers (present in Italy, among others, world champions and Federica Pellegrini Alessia Filippi), after they have visited the 'red zone' of the capital of Abruzzo.
Mr. Giovanni Benevieri, owner of A.S.D. Rari Nantes Aquila, thanked Jaked: "I can be grateful for a gesture that serves the Lombard, psychologically, to promote the sports activities and swimming in general, a center where, understandably, it is difficult to return to a completely normal life, despite the efforts of all, starting from our wonderful people. "
